United Kingdom

The United Kingdom’s reputation results from political influence, cultural influence, and the brands that call it home.

These are as varied as Charles Darwin, David Bowie, and J.K. Rowling. The UK is also known for having world-class universities and for perhaps its greatest export: the English language. It is the sixth-biggest economy in the world, and in the Best Countries ranking the UK retains eighth place this year.

The two strongest factors in the UK’s performance are Power and Entrepreneurship, followed closely by Agility and Cultural Influence. It is perceived to be the #4 most powerful country, and is #1 for having strong international alliances, #2 for being well connected, and is among the leaders for economic and political influence. While it is seen as being one of the most expensive manufacturing centres in the world, its population is thought of as highly skilled and educated, and the country is seen as modern and technologically advanced. Business Decision Makers have a slightly different view of the UK to other Best Countries respondents, and are far more positive about the UK tax environment, as well as saying it’s a more fun, friendly place than other participants in the study.
